As I reflect on the values that our library brings to our community, I can’t help but recall the invaluable memories made there for my family. When my children were little, the library was always a special meeting place. Our children loved going to story time, participating in activities and reading challenges, and making new friends. As an adult, it was a great place to get support from other parents as well as various groups that met there. These things continue and are provided by the library, along with so many other amazing things.

I’m sure many of us can recall our favorite books from our childhood and maybe even memories of loved ones reading to us. While the times have changed and we may no longer be signing out VHS tapes, the library has grown and expanded to accommodate the ever-changing needs of its patrons. All you have to do is browse through the library Facebook page to see the expansive offerings they provide. So many opportunities to learn, to grow and to come together.

Doing all these amazing things costs money, and we are at a time where it seems the cost of everything is going up. This is why I feel the need to prioritize the things that not only bring value to my family, but also to the community as a whole. In my opinion the library serves as a hub of our community. It offers something for everyone. It’s a safe space with real people who offer valuable help, not an automated message. It’s a space for making connections, having conversations, holding a door and exchanging a smile. Yes, we can easily access books and trainings online, but in a world where instant gratification seems to be more of the norm, I still value in-person conversation and communication. This can be found at the library, with caring individuals who, like the rest of us, are trying to make a living while also making a difference.

I feel it is important to think about the things you are willing to let go of, especially in a community where there aren’t a significant amount of available options for children, adults and families. I support the library and look forward to seeing the future offerings provided by the staff as well as community members. This is something we can come together on, and promote.

I love to read, and I cherish the opportunity to hold a good book, to turn the pages and get lost in the words. Some readers may choose to go back a few chapters to clarify something they may have skimmed over. Others like to jump to the end without knowing how the plot developed or how the characters got there. I value putting it all together and appreciate the time, knowledge and energy that went into putting all of the parts together to make it complete. I hope you will do the same when considering the library budget.
